What is Technical Writing?
Michael H. Markel, Director of Technical Communication, Boise State University defines
“Technical writing conveys specific information about a technical subject to a specific audience for a specific purpose…The words and graphics of technical writing are meant to be practical: that is, to communicate a body of factual information that will help an audience understand a subject or carry out a task.”
It is evident from the above definition that a Technical Writer is different from a Content author and he/she requires working on topics that are technical in nature. A technical writer requires a thorough understanding of technical subject to be able to grasp and then document it for the targeted audiences.
Understanding and Justifying the Product
Any individual belonging to non-technical background will seldom be able to grasp the product as is created from an engineer’s eye. While a techie would not just grasp but also with his genuine technical bent justify the facilities in best possible manner to the audiences too.
Documenting the Most Technical Style
While conveying a technical information, a technical writer uses various presentational styles to convey information in precise manner. These involve the following:
- Structure a technical paper.
- Properly integrate flow charts, data dictionaries and plots into a technical paper.
- Properly integrate figures into technical papers.
- Properly integrate equations into a technical paper.
All this and more is added to technical document and is attained only by individual with Technical Heart and Soul.
For Self Up-gradation
Even thorough searching and navigating through Internet links to keep oneself abreast with the latest technology requires a fairly good technical know-how. For a non-tech searching Internet is as bad as being wandering in the lost world.
